Automation ROI: What We Actually Measure
"It saves time" isn't a metric. Here's what we actually track before and after an automation rollout.
"Saves Time" Isn't a Metric
Almost every automation pitch claims it saves time. That claim is meaningless until it's tied to a specific number someone was already tracking before the project started — otherwise there's nothing to compare against six months later.
The Four Numbers We Track
Before any rollout, we baseline: manual interventions per week, mean time to recover from an exception, the error rate on the specific process being automated, and how much of that error rate was actually preventable. Those same four numbers get re-measured after.
Why We Report the Uncomfortable Number Too
Automation rarely gets to zero manual work, and pretending otherwise erodes trust in the numbers that matter. We report the manual-fallback percentage alongside the win, because a client who trusts the reporting is a client who lets us automate the next process too.
